PDO AND PGI: THE EUROPEAN GUARANTEE
How to recognize certified excellence
In the global market, where quality is often claimed but rarely verifiable, the European PDO and PGI certifications represent a concrete and transparent guarantee. They are not mere brands: they are the result of a rigorous, independent, and traceable control system that protects and enhances the name and qualitative reputation of a product while guaranteeing the consumer.
The PDO — Protected Designation of Origin — certifies that all stages of production, from the cultivation of the olives to the pressing and bottling, take place in a defined geographical area and according to a precise production specification. The link with the territory is total and verifiable: every PDO bottle is the authentic expression of a specific place, with its native varieties, its climate, and its olive-growing tradition. Buying a PDO oil means buying a piece of European territory — its history, its landscape, and its character.
The PGI — Protected Geographical Indication — guarantees that at least one stage of the production process takes place in the reference geographical area, ensuring a significant link with the territory and compliance with high quality standards. In this case too, behind the brand is an independent control system that verifies compliance with the production specification at every stage of the supply chain.
Both certifications stem from a fundamental principle: quality cannot be separated from origin. A European PDO or PGI extra virgin olive oil is not simply a superior quality product — it is a product whose quality is inseparable from the place where it was produced, the people who cultivated it, and the methods they chose to follow. It is this uniqueness that makes it irreproducible.
The European certification system is among the strictest in the world. To use the name of the recognized and protected product and to bear the European PDO or PGI guarantee logo, every producer must demonstrate compliance with a detailed production specification that regulates every aspect of production: the permitted olive varieties, cultivation techniques, harvesting times and methods, pressing procedures, and the chemical and organoleptic parameters of the final product. Controls are carried out by independent and accredited certification bodies in a systematic and continuous manner.
Recognizing these marks is simple: every certified bottle carries the European PDO or PGI logo, immediately visible on the label. A conscious purchasing decision that starts right there — from that small guarantee that tells a great story of quality, authenticity, and respect for the land.
